The Harper Conservatives (namely, lame-duck minister Rona Ambrose, who is due to get shuffled out of the enviro portfolio any second) made an announcement the other day that biofuels will have to make up 5% of gasoline by 2010. Actually, the Tories made the same announcement back in May, 2006. Back then, David Suzuki dismissed the goal as insignificant.
Besides, the debate is still raging over how environmentally friendly ethanol really is -- considering all the pesticides, water and fossil fuels it takes to grow and ship it (though new technologies will hopefully remedy this at least in part). I put in that last part to appease ol' Squeaky Wheel -- we've had this argument many times before.
